Frequently asked questions
How many burgers and hot dogs per person for a cookout?
Plan about 1.5 burgers and 1 to 1.5 hot dogs per adult when both are served, and about 1 of each per kid. CalculaFood adjusts this for party length, appetite and how many other mains you pick.
How many pounds of meat per person for a BBQ?
A common rule is about 1/2 lb of cooked meat per adult (around 3/4 lb raw for cuts like brisket or pork shoulder) and about 1/4 lb per kid. The calculator splits that total across the meats you select.
How much pizza do I need for a game day party?
Figure about 3 slices per adult and 2 per kid, which is roughly 1 large 8-slice pizza for every 3 adults. Add more if the game runs long or there are few other snacks.
How many pounds of turkey per person for Thanksgiving?
Buy about 1 to 1.5 lb of whole turkey per guest — the higher number if you want leftovers. A 15 lb turkey feeds roughly 10 to 12 people.
How much beer, soda and ice should I buy?
Plan about 1 alcoholic drink per drinking adult per hour after the first hour (2 in the first), 2 to 3 sodas or waters per guest, and about 1 to 2 lb of ice per guest. Only adults who drink are counted for alcohol.
How many plates, cups and napkins do I need?
Plan about 1.5 to 2 plates, 2 to 3 cups and 3 napkins per guest so people can grab fresh ones for dessert and refills.
